Tours.com is a worldwide directory of tours and locations that claims to be the travel industry’s online Yellow Pages.  Dozenvacation.com decided to look up their site and see if it proved useful.

This site covers the globe but doesn’t include some of the specialist locations other sites had access to, such as Antarctica.  However, all the main tourist faves are here.

How easy is it to navigate around the site? We tried and tested it out and graded..

Tours.com has a lot of navigation tools to help customers consider various vacation packages, trips and attractions.  There is a general search tool by vacation type, US state or country as well as Travel Channels which list online vacation packages and other related services.

Tours.com simply sends you to other sites where you need to firm up your select and make reservations.  It is basically a massive, themed search engine but because the results are all links to external sites you can’t interrogate them and filter by price, date, holiday type etc. Overall this site has its uses but many limitations too.

Why is it different to other vacation package sites? What features or tools make this site stand out. We graded on innovation..

We like the selection of travel videos on the site but overall feel that it over-relies on signposting customers to other sites.  There is not enough unique content on the site itself which is a bit of a wasted opportunity.

The site needs simplifying, enhancing and additional features including articles, tips and special offers before it can fully compete with other industry sites.

Special vacation package deals are lacking on Tours.com.  As it links to online travel sites and not to individual vacation package deals, it is unable to promote specific deals.  Customers must search the individual sites for these.

Help in finding what you want. With so many packages to choose from, how does the site help you pick what is right for you? Are there any site favorites or recommendations?.
The list of holiday themes is very comprehensive and aside from regular categories includes very specific themes, such as horseback, gourmet and eclipse. There is also a local attractions finding tool to help plan excursions. The navigation tools are this site’s strength and certainly inform decision making.  However a major weakness is that customers still need to go through the rigmarole of further navigation tools on the sites they are signposted to before they can decide on their best options.  This limits its value somewhat and elongates the time customers need to spend firming up their vacation plans.
